Day Two: Hilo side of Big Island

Day Two:  We got up early and headed into Hilo to look around.....saw Rainbow Falls and Banyan Drive and a view of the peak of Mauna Kea from the bay.

We then headed south to Volcanoes National Park.  It was amazing!  We saw smoke coming from a crater in Kilauea Caldera (Kilauea is the world's most active volcano....right here in the USA.  We went in a lava tube, drove among and walked on lava fields.  It was surreal.....and different from when Rich came here with his family almost 42 years ago because a lot of this lava has flowed since then!  We drove down the Chain of Craters Road to the end and saw many who were taking a 3 hour hike to see some lava that is currently flowing.  It was late in the day and we knew we were not up for that!

Walking on lava field.

We drove on down the coast, briefly stopping at Punalu'u Black Sand Beach and saw turtles resting.

On to the town of Na'alehu where we had a nice dinner at Hana Hou Bakery which bills itself as the Southernmost restaurant in the US.  It was great.

We headed back to the Volcano and saw the glow from Kilauea....very amazing experience!  I don't think the picture does it justice but here it is....

Blurry but still amazing!

Michael has much better photos of everything, but not easily slapped up on a blog.....Mine are quick (but not so easy for me) from my phone or our point and shoot, but it gives you an idea of what we are seeing.  Michael's photos may be posted later.....or maybe you can buy his book!!  More later.....off to hit the road again (on day 5....we are behind but must keep moving)......Aloha!
